Trivia

  • Stan and Kyle break off their friendship in this episode, but unlike other times, they don't make up at the end. However they did make up in the next episode.
  • Kenny is unhooded at Stan's party and his face is not obscured. He can be seen during the shot of all of the boys who attended Stan's party right after they finished singing "Happy Birthday." He is sitting on the left side of the table, third from the front. This is the only time since the movie that Kenny's face has appeared entirely unaltered and unobscured.
  • When a news report speaks about the Tween Wave, the network is CNN and not altered as South Park usually does with every network name.
  • Stan's mobile operator is called "Singular". "Singular" is a parody of a defunct mobile operator called Cingular (now part of AT&T).
  • All of the boys have an iPod Touch/iPhone, except Kenny who has an iPod Shuffle.

References to Popular Culture

Music

  • "Landslide": released by the Fleetwood Mac featuring Stevie Nicks in 1975. From the album Rumours .
  • "Every Breath You Take": released by the Police in 1983. From the album Synchronicity.
  • Randy Marsh's Tween Wave name, Steamy Ray Vaughn, is a parody of blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughn (October 3, 1954 – August 27, 1990).
  • Randy performs with a woman calling herself "Steamy Nicks". This is a parody of Stevie Nicks.
  • There are a few references to modern-day pop and R&B artists featured in the episode, most especially in Randy's room at the time he tried to get into Tween Wave. The cover for Gersploosh is a take on the album Scream album by pop-rock band Tokio Hotel. There is a visible poster in Randy's room that says "Bruno Saturn". The name and logo text parodies real pop musician Bruno Mars.

Movies

Real

  • Mr. Popper's Penguins: released by 20th Century Fox on June 17, 2011. Starring Jim Carrey.
  • Jack and Jill: released by Columbia Pictures on November 11, 2011. Starring Adam Sandler.
  • Zookeeper: released by Columbia Pictures/Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures on July 8, 2011. The Doctor that examines Stan mentions the film Zookeeper

Fake

Video Games

  • L.A. Noire: released by Rockstar Games on May 17, 2011. The boys comment on its game play and refer to it by name. It is looked on with a positive perspective in all but Stan's case.
  • Custer's Revenge: released by Mystique on September 23, 1982. When Randy performs on stage, there's an arcade machine with in the background - an early video game infamous for its offensive content and was widely regarded one of the worst video games ever made at the time.

Continuity

  • Randy and Sharon reveal that they aren't happy together and divorce. This is the second time this has happened, the first being in the episode "Clubhouses". As permanent as it initially seems in this episode, they work it out in the next episode.
  • After the first episode in the season, "HUMANCENTiPAD", it seemed that Liane Cartman had started behaving strictly towards her son, not falling for Cartman's faking of being a good kid, however, this changed again in the next episode, in which Cartman seems to gain control over his mother's life as it was before "HUMANCENTiPAD".
  • When Sharon talks about Randy getting into baseball fights, obsessing over World of Warcraft and becoming a chef, these are references to the events that occurred in "The Losing Edge", "Make Love, Not Warcraft", and "Crème Fraiche", respectively.
  • This is the second episode to feature a cliffhanger that would be revealed months later. The first was the "Cartman's Mom is a Dirty Slut", the Season One finale.
  • This is the only episode where Cartman and Kyle have seemed to have gotten along throughout the entire episode despite the many years of constant conflict and hostility between each other.
  • The game Thirst for Blood can be seen in arcade form at the pizza party. Thirst for Blood was a game for the Okama GameSphere in the episode "Towelie".
  • This is the second time the credits have rolled in silence, the first time being in the episode "Free Willzyx".
  • This is Sheila's only speaking appearance in Season Fifteen.

Controversy

  • This episode caused a massive uproar amongst fans. There were thousands of tweets about whether this would be the last episode of South Park. However, the air dates for the next seven episodes were announced on South Park Studios, and creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker stated their intentions to continue the show.[1]

Goofs

  • When Sharon is washing the dishes, the thumb on her right hand switches sides.
  • At the birthday party, Kyle is sitting next to Liane. However, when the shot moves back to her for the line "every time somebody gets a present...", Kyle (who was present in the shot the last time the angle was used) disappears. He reappears later.
  • When Cartman, Kenny and Kyle are playing L.A. Noire, Cartman says that one of the people in-game are lying and tells Kyle to hit X although the player actually has to hit Y for the "Lie" option. The X button is for the "Doubt" option.

Hidden Visitors

  • A hidden visitor can be seen at the scene when Randy plays at the bowling alley in one of the shots of the crowd.
