Trivia

  • The episode's title is a reference to the Season Three episode "Tweek vs. Craig."
  • This episode marks the second time that Tweek and Craig have been involved in a physical confrontation with one another, the first being "Tweek vs. Craig."
  • Randy refers to the Chinese President as "Mr. Jinping", which is wrong due to the fact that "Jinping" is his given name and Chinese surnames are always mentioned first. So the correct form of address would be "Mr. Xi".
  • Randy confuses Don King with the Japanese invasion of Nanjing aka The Rape of Nanking.
  • The Japanese text at the bottom of Wendy's presentation screen at the beginning of the episode reads boizu rabu, a wasei-eigo rendering of "Boys' Love", another term for yaoi.

  • It is shown that Mayor McDaniels used to be married as she is seen looking at a picture of her husband and later seen mourning at his grave.

References to Popular Culture

  • The episode title is a reference to a genre of fan-art called yaoi this involves two or more male characters ("yuri" for female characters) romantically linked in some way that would not normally occur in the authors intended version.
  • The song "The Book of Love" by Peter Gabriel, plays as everyone is overjoyed about Tweek and Craig being together while Craig, Tweek, Thomas & Stan contemplate over the situation and yaoi is drawn and bought of Tweek and Craig.
  • The song "Say Something" by A Great Big World, plays after Tweek and Craig's pretend break up and new yaoi is drawn to depict the split.
  • Towards the end of the episode, Craig plays Assassin's Creed Syndicate while Tweek watches.
  • This episode may have been inspired by the MTV relationship comedy Faking It.
  • Craigs father, Thomas, references the 2005 LGBT drama film Brokeback Mountain with the line "Why can't you quit him?" Where in the movie the line was "Why can't I quit you?"
  • Randy mentions "Maui Zaui" when he pretends to know what Stan is talking about concerning yaoi at school. Maui Zaui is referencing a type of pizza with ham and pineapple toppings available at Round Table Pizza restaurants.
  • In Craig's room, a poster depicting the Starship Enterprise from Star Trek can be seen on his wall behind his bed. Additionally, he has a toy robot on his dresser that resembles the G1 incarnation of Megatron from The Transformers.
  • In Tweek's room, a poster depicting what appears to be Ant-Man can be seen on the back of his bedroom door, although Ant-Man has a light green and black color scheme as opposed to a red and grey color scheme.
