Trivia

  • At the beginning of the episode, Cartman is in Counselor Mackey's office for bullying Billy Turner, who had actually fat-shamed and bullied him beforehand.
  • Though it isn't well known, Eric suffers from various mental disorders, some due to sexual abuse.
    • He occasionally cries at night due to not having a real father figure. (Le Petit Tourette)
    • At least once, Liane dressed him up as a mailman and made him dance while she did crack a had sex with some stranger in his dad's bedroom. (An Elephant Makes Love to a Pig)
    • In Fun with Veal, Eric is woken up by Kyle, Stan and Butters to help save the baby cows from slaughter. Startled awake, Cartman blurts out, "No, Uncle Jesse, No!" implying that one of his relatives may have been abusing him, although it could just as easily mean he only had a fear--perhaps even a sexual one--of Jesse Katsopolis from Full House.
    • Eric once admitted to having sexual contact with his cousin's genitalia. Although it is unknown if this was "consensual" or not, given that most of Eric's relatives are older than him, not to mention that Eric is so young, it was more likely than not, highly inappropriate, if not illegal, perhaps even statutory rape. (Le Petit Tourette)
  • Cartman is shown to be left-handed in this episode.
  • Cartman's appearance is slightly altered as a result of proper eating habits after his mother begins to discipline him on his dieting. Although subtle, his body becomes somewhat slimmer than normal.
  • One of the handful of episodes to be rated TV-14.
  • Damien Thorn, Tommy Turner, Heidi Turner, Millie Larsen, Pete Thelman, Lola, Esther, Boy with C Cap, and Louis all appear in the Super Nanny opening.
  • At the bottom of Cartman's plan to kill his mother, the final instruction says "FRAME TOKEN!".
  • Liane Cartman is shown to have some skill in Sumi-e or ink wash painting, which is a type of brush painting from East Asia using various concentrations of black ink. [1]

References to Popular Culture

  • Dog trainer Cesar Millan and his show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan are parodied in this episode. Some of his actual techniques such as creating "calm-assertive energy", establishing dominance and his vocal marks such as "Tsch" are used on Cartman.
    • In a 2010 interview, Millan mentioned that he was contacted by Trey Parker and Matt Stone who loved his show and he was flattered that they wanted to make an episode about him. [2]
    • On November 13, 2019, Millan uploaded a reaction video on his YouTube channel, showing how much he enjoys watching the episode 13 years after its original airing. It was also shared on the South Park Twitter account with a .gif from the episode of Cesar using his technique to keep Cartman away from the fried chicken.[3][4]
  • Cartman chained Billy Turner's ankle to a flag pole, poisoned his lunch milk, gave him a hacksaw, and told him that the only way he could reach the antidote in time would be to cut through his ankle. This a reference to the first Saw film.
  • One of the paintings at Nanny Central is Leonardo da Vinci's "Lady With An Ermine".
  • Cartman hums Journey's "Don't Stop Believing".
    • In the Latin American dub, Cartman is singing "La Camisa Negra" by Juanes.
  • After Cartman is leaving his mother's room, he stumbles around the hallway and appears to take on different physical appearances. The transformations closely resemble the final scene in Ken Russell's Altered States. A dead giveaway to this reference is both Cartman and Dr. Jessup appear to have complexions that sporadically change to something that resembles the static from a TV without a signal.
  • At the end of the episode, the camera slowly zooming into Cartman's smiling face while the song Ave Satani starts playing is a reference to The Omen. It could also be a reference to the horror film Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter.
  • One of the Nannies shown is a Skeksis from The Dark Crystal.
  • The other 'Nannies' that are parodied have real shows. They include:
  • Cartman's line to Stella "Always a mom's maid, never a mom" is a reference to the idiom "Always a bridesmaid, never a bride"[5]

Continuity

  • There is a clip from "The Passion of the Jew" in this episode.
  • When Cartman asks Stan to shoot Liane in the face, Stan asks "Where am I supposed to get a gun?". Considering that his uncle Jimbo runs the gun shop and hasn't had any problem getting the boys some firepower in the past, this shouldn't actually be too difficult.
  • Cartman not knowing Jimmy's last name is a joke on the show's inconsistent portrayal at the time of airing. "Krazy Kripples" had established it as Swanson, however, "Up the Down Steroid" then gave it as Valmer. In later episodes, the name would eventually be confirmed as Valmer.
  • This is the first episode to focus on Liane Cartman since the "Cartman's Mom is Still a Dirty Slut".
  • When Cartman is bullying Nanny Stella because she has no kids, the TV in the background says "Fony", a parody of the corporation, just like the one seen in The Return of Chef.

Goofs

  • When Cartman is eating the grapefruit after his change, it's restored as if he never took a bite of it.
  • In this episode, Nanny Stella says she has no kids of her own, but in real life, she is married with children.
