Prior, when Parker and Stone let celebrities voice act in an episode, they only let them play very minor roles by voicing animals and having them make the noises of said animals, as evidenced by George Clooney's voice role of Sparky in "Big Gay Al's Big Gay Boat Ride".
  • This is also the first episode in the series to primarily focus on Wendy Testaburger.
  • For some reason the HD version of this episode still has Wendy's flashbacks of Stan rendered in SD quality, but are given a blur around the edges. This same thing is also done with the flashback scenes in the HD version of "City on the Edge of Forever (Flashbacks)".

References to Popular Culture

  • The actress Natasha Henstridge voiced Ms. Ellen, who at the time, was most famous for her appearance in the 1995 film Species.
    • During the opening credits for this episode she is billed as a guest star in the episode, however instead of Henstridge's name she's credited as "The Chick From Species".
  • When Mr. Garrison has reconstructive surgery, he ultimately chooses a face that resembles actor David Hasselhoff.
    • The plot of Garrison getting the Hasselhoff face is a parody of Knight Rider, a TV series which starred Hasselhoff. In the show, his character Michael Knight, first played by Larry Anderson, was shot and had to get plastic surgery done on his face, making him David Hasselhoff by the end of the episode.
  • When Chef is trying to gauge how attractive Ms. Ellen is, he offers the following female celebrities as basis of comparison:
    1. Vanessa Williams
    2. Toni Braxton
    3. Pamela Anderson
    4. Erin Gray.
  • Chef specifies how Erin Gray appeared in the second season of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, the TV series which she is most famous for appearing in.
  • The music during Wendy's sad montage is sung by actress Toddy Walters.
  • According to Cartman, instead of teaching the children their multiplication table, Mr. Garrison was educating them on the thrilling subject of actress Yasmine Bleeth's romance life.
    • Bleeth was best known for her role on the TV show Baywatch. Several months after this episode originally aired, she appeared in the film BASEketball starring South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. She was referenced again in the Season Five episode, "The Entity".
    • According to Garrison, she dated actor Richard Grieco who is best known for his role as Detective Dennis Booker on the TV series 21 Jump Street. Garrison had also told the children that Grieco briefly had his own show, referring to the 21 Jump Street spinoff, Booker, that last only one season.
  • The mere mention of the 1997 sci-fi film Contact causes Mr. Garrison to become violently ill. The film stars Jodie Foster playing the role of Ellie Arroway, who is trying to contact aliens. The film ends with her meeting an alien which takes on the form of her father. Garrison slams the movie for having such a bad ending. Matt Stone and Trey Parker share this opinion towards the film and this is the first of many critiques of the film to appear in an episode of South Park.
  • Wendy asks Ms. Ellen if people her age require Depends undergarment. These adult diapers for incontinence were invented in 1980 by Kimberly Clark. The common stereotype associated to the product is that they are worn by the elderly who have no control over their waste functions.
  • Kyle mishears Chef explaining that Ms. Ellen is a lesbian. The word he hears is plebeian. The historical use of the word was to classify the general population of ancient Rome. In modern times, it's used as a derogatory term for those considered to be common or ignorant.
  • Whenever Mr. Garrison struts his stuff, the song "Shadow Dancing" plays. The song was sung by Andy Gibb. The song was released in 1978.
  • Cartman says that his mother told him that to become a lesbian, one has to lick carpet. Carpet muncher is a derogatory term for lesbian. In a later scene, Cartman can be seen eating an old cardboard box on the advice of his mother. Box is a slang term for vagina.
  • According to the record store owner Stan visited, to be a lesbian, you need to listen to the Indigo Girls, the boys mispronounce the name as "Indiglo Girls".
  • The Indigo Girls' song that the boys play is called "Make it Easier" from their 1989 album Strange Fire.
  • When Wendy is made over by Bebe, Cartman thinks she looks like Olivia Newton-John as she appeared in her role of Sandy Olsen in the 1978 film version of the musical Grease. However, he confuses Olivia Newton-John's with male singer Elton John.
  • The line "we just got a call in the office: your grandma just died" is from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, when Ferris gets his girlfriend Sloane out of school.
  • When Mr. Garrison is posing for pictures at the Photo Dojo, a production still from Cannibal! The Musical, which was Parker's first film. It was released by Troma Entertainment in 1996.
  • Mr. Garrison decides that if he's going to be able to pose for more pictures, he's going to need more Smack. Smack is the street name for the drug Heroin. Drug abuse is a cliché of the modeling industry in the 1990s as the gaunt thin look was popular at the time.
  • Ms. Ellen's demise is extremely similar to that of The Enormous Crocodile from the Roald Dahl book of the same name, because they both have been shot into the sun.

Goofs

Wendy Red Hat Toms Rhinoplasty

Wendy's red hat.

  • When Cartman exclaims about Ms. Ellen's outfit, Wendy's hat turns dark red.
  • When Wendy leaves after yelling at Stan, the boy's hair that is similar to Kevin's turns black. A minute before, his hair was brown. Bebe's position also changes position from next to Wendy to in front of her.
  • For one moment when Wendy is yelling at Stan, the table on the right is missing.
  • When the children see the new look of Mr. Garrison, Wendy is wearing her normal outfit instead of the leather one she wore to impress Stan. Then in the next scene, Wendy wears the leather outfit again.
  • When Kenny is impaled by a sword, blood splats from his face, but when Stan and Kenny acknowledge his death his face is clean and the blood just starts to leak from his face.
  • Mr. Garrison says he always dreams of "hanging out and screwing hot chicks", despite the fact that he is homosexual. It's probably because his character hasn't been fully developed in early stage.

Kenny's Death

  • When the Iraqis arrest Ms. Ellen, she grabs a scimitar off one of them. She quickly loses her grip on it and it flies away, impaling Kenny between the eyes and pinning him to the wall.
