Trivia[]

  • This episode proved so popular that it was released on DVD long before the Season Eight box set. It came out on August 31, 2004, on a DVD including the episodes "Christian Rock Hard" and "Red Hot Catholic Love". This was to coincide with the release of The Passion of the Christ on DVD.
  • This is the second time in which Cartman portrays Hitler, the first time being in "Pinkeye".
  • This episode was re-aired on August 9, 2006, following Gibson's July 2006 arrest.
  • In spite of the episode's popularity, Trey Parker and Matt Stone noted on its DVD commentary that this was not one of their favorite episodes, saying that it would have been much better had they more time to work on it.
  • When Cartman is on the phone to Stan, he threatens him by claiming that he is "like six feet tall" (1.83 meters), which is the exact height of Trey Parker.
  • In the episodes leading up to this one, Cartman mentions that Kyle still has not seen The Passion, and it was even used as a plot point in "Good Times with Weapons". This was also used in "Up the Down Steroid".
  • When Cartman leads the townspeople in the march, they chant in German the following phrases: "Es ist Zeit für Säuberung", "Es ist Zeit für Rache", and "Wir müssen die Juden ausrotten." Translated into English, these mean "It is time for cleansing", "It is time for revenge", and "We must exterminate the Jews" respectively.
  • Even though The Passion of the Christ is a major plot point, Jesus Christ himself never appears in the episode since he died in "Red Sleigh Down" and did not return until "Fantastic Easter Special".
  • The description of The Passion of the Christ by Stan, Kyle, and Kenny, along with the movie theater, is incorrect to the actual movie.
  • Despite Kenny's tendency to be killed, he managed to escape Mel Gibson's rampage, unscathed, thus being one of the times where Kenny did survive in harmful situations.
  • This episode implies that Matt Stone and Trey Parker exist in universe.

References to Popular Culture[]

  • Mel Gibson's behavior through much the episode is a parody of Daffy Duck, specifically in a scene where Gibson parodies the cartoon Yankee Doodle Daffy, in which Porky Pig is trying to escape through multiple doors only to be blocked by Daffy in a different costume each time. Stan even refers to his behavior as "freaking Daffy," at which point Gibson says, "You know, this means war!" a favorite saying of Daffy Duck. Another Daffy Duck saying he says is "And Good Evening Frieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeends-a!"
  • When Stan and Kenny leave to get their money back from Mel Gibson, Stan says that they had done the same thing after seeing BASEketball, which starred South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone but now regret it.
  • Gibson is heard saying "Gimme back my money", which is a reference to an often-used quote from the 1996 movie Ransom where Mel Gibson's character, Tom Mullen, is heard screaming "Gimme back my son!" into a phone.
  • As Kyle's nightmare progresses the montage "speeds up", with the different Jesus and his crucifixion related scenes having less and less duration. He wakes up screaming after a split second "appearance" of Alan Alda.
  • Mel Gibson shouts the Klingon battle cry "Qapla'!" several times as he chases Stan and Kenny. The same cry was also used by George Clooney and other actors of the Film Actors Guild in Team America, which was also written, produced, and directed by Matt Stone and Trey Parker.
  • The truck that Mel Gibson is driving in when chasing after Stan and Kenny is modeled after the vehicle he drove in The Road Warrior. The truck is even right-hand drive; Mad Max is set in Australia which drives on the left so cars are right-hand drives.
  • When Mel Gibson is chasing Stan and Kenny through his house, he stops in front of a mirror and says, "Two days ago I saw a rig that could haul that tanker. If you want to get out of here, talk to me," a line from Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. When the boys later find his wallet, he is heard to yell "Freedom!" offscreen while looking for them, a reference to Braveheart.
  • The Mel Gibson Fanclub Hot-line phone number, when dialed, sounds like the Asia song "Heat of the Moment". This marks the second time "Heat of the Moment" has appeared in a South Park episode.
  • At the start of the episode, while the boys were playing in Eric's mom's new car, Eric said, "set phasers to stun." This is a popular Star Trek catchphrase, thus the boys could be playing Star Trek (incidentally, "Engineer" Kenny would, were he in an episode, be wearing red - the redshirts normally ended up dead).
  • There are actually three paintings that are flashed repeatedly during Kyle's nightmare. All three are by 15th-century painter H. Bosch, one named Christ Carrying the Cross. The first painting that flashes is called Christ Before Pilate, also by Bosch.

Censorship[]

  • The explicit use of the swastika or "Hakenkreuz" as a N*** symbol has been censored out in parts of Europe because the symbol is illegal in some European countries (particularly Germany and Austria, where showing N*** symbolism is illegal unless it is put into historical context). It also has been censored the second time it aired on Comedy Central, in American, British, and Australian syndication, and in the version available on iTunes, showing instead a red flag with a white circle in the middle without the swastika.
  • The episode was not aired in several countries, including Russia.

Continuity[]

  • As of "Good Times with Weapons", Cartman exhibits a deeper fascination with Mel Gibson, though he is seen to have a poster of a parody of Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior in his room. His hatred of the Jews is seen to be justified by Gibson's film, The Passion.
  • Cartman is grounded for this incident as it was mentioned by Liane in "AWESOM-O" which aired two weeks after this episode.
  • The "Looney Toon" Mel Gibson character re-appears for a cameo in Season Eleven's "Imaginationland", in which he was shown to be just as crazy as he had always been.
  • This is the third time that Kyle has interacted with Father Maxi, after "Spontaneous Combustion" and "Do the Handicapped Go to Hell?". Despite the fact that Father Maxi knows that Kyle is Jewish from these episodes, Kyle still goes through the effort to try to hide the fact that he is talking about his own feelings regarding the situation.

Goofs[]

  • Cartman tells Kyle that The Passion of the Christ is the top-grossing film of all time. This is incorrect, as James Cameron's film Titanic was the highest-grossing film when this episode aired. However, it was the highest-grossing R-rated film at the time.
  • The red-shirt man attending Cartman's meeting states that the meeting was organized by an "8 year-old boy," however shortly before that he asked an adult couple if they were holding the event. He cannot both know and not know who's holding the event. This line about an 8 year-old boy was most likely meant to be spoken by the other man in the scene.
  • When Mel Gibson begins shooting at Stan and Kenny in retaliation for Stan calling him crazy, he uses a pistol. In the next scene featuring Gibson, as he chases Stan and Kenny through his mansion, he is carrying a revolver instead.

Common[]

  • All whipping sound effects in The Passion are removed in the Hungarian and Italian dubs.
  • During Cartman's phone call with Stan, Cartman's claim of being "six feet tall" is converted to metric of:
    • Czech: 2 metres (6 ft 6 in)
    • Hungarian: 180 cm (5 ft 10 in)
  • In the German and Latin Spanish dubs, Cartman's first line of "Es ist Zeit für Säubern" is replaced with "Es ist Zeit für Reich".

Czech[]

  • All dialogs in The Passion are removed, while the volume of Jesus's screams are significantly softened.

Italian[]

  • The timing for the Mel Gibson's fan club meeting is changed from 5:30pm (no specified date) to 5:00pm tomorrow.
  • While packing for Malibu, Stan's line of "This is just like when we got our money back for BASEketball!" is changed to "They (filmmakers) absolutely cannot get away with this!".

Spanish (Latin America)[]

  • The German chant of "Wir müssen die Juden ausrotten" is translated as "Wir mü die juden auspodridos". "Auspodridos" is nonsensical in both German and Spanish, and is likely a result of "rotten" in ausrotten being translated as an English word.

Ukrainian[]

  • While Stan and Kenny are watching The Passion, all of Jesus's screams in the background are muted.
  • Jack Garrett does not address himself with a last name.
  • All attempts on the chant "Wir müssen die Juden ausrotten" at the Bijou Cinema are not executed in sync with each other.
