Trivia[]

  • This episode addresses the real-life transgender bathroom debate, featuring conflicts between Cartman and Wendy, as well as Randy and his female coworkers. The school ultimately discontinues the transgender bathroom and allows students to use their preferred restrooms, with a "Cissy" option for those who prefer distancing themselves from transgender students.
  • This is the second time where Wendy dresses as a male. Her first time was in the episode "Something You Can Do with Your Finger."
  • Randy Marsh works at the U.S. Geological Survey Colorado division.
  • Kyle only has one line in this episode, while Kenny has none and only appears in the beginning and end.
  • Eric Cartman or Erica now claims to be "transginger" and can use the girls' bathroom. In the episode "201", it revealed Cartman is half ginger and half Denver Bronco from his late father Jack Tenorman.
  • This episode was originally titled "Cartman's Bathroom"[1].
  • It is noted in this episode that Randy is 45 years of age.
  • For details on the LGBT references in this episode as well as the general progression of the South Park series with regards to its promotion of LGBT, please see "LGBT in South Park".
  • As a pro-song-house singer & writer & producer, the DAW Randy uses appears to be Avid Pro Tools, the same program used by the sound department of South Park Studios, and many other artists. Footage of South Park Studios's sound engineer messing with Trey & Matt's lines in Avid Pro Tools can be seen in their documentary "6 Days to Air: The Making of 'South Park'".
    • Unlike normal artists, Randy, as Lorde, builds his song entirely on samples, this is possibly his own special technique.
    • The singer Sia confirmed she provided the voice of Randy singing as Lorde.[2].
  • Despite the new rule that the children can enter either bathroom, no girls are ever seen entering the boys' bathroom.
  • Randy's mustache is blurred poorly in the album art of Push (Feeling Good on a Wednesday), which points that his manager is cheap.

References to Popular Culture[]

  • In the world of the show, Randy moonlights as New Zealand teen pop singer Lorde and writes all of her songs.
  • The jabs at Spin magazine are based on an article the magazine's website published regarding the show's concluding joke in "Gluten Free Ebola".[3]
    • The Spin reporter's name is "Brandon Carlile", a reference to the writer of the article, Brennan Carly.
    • Spin later posted a response to this episode and the controversy surrounding their previous article.
  • In Shelly's room, there is a poster for the animated film Frozen as well as a poster for the Marvel Studios film Uniters of the Universe, a reference to Guardians of the Galaxy.
  • While dressed as Lorde at work, Randy is seen wearing a Cramps T-shirt. They were a punk rock band of the 1980s that played around with traditional gender roles and wrote kitschy 1950's inspired rockabilly songs.
  • Sia, a new blonde girl seen in the girl's bathroom, resembles the singer she is named after.
  • Brandon Carlile's decision to delete the article revealing Lorde's identity as Randy is similar to Ben Urich deleting his article revealing Daredevil to be Matt Murdock in the film Daredevil.
  • Whenever the lights are turned on in the cisgender bathroom, Antonio Vivaldi's "Spring" from The Four Seasons is played.
  • Butters responds to Stan that "he's not a woman, he's not a man, he is something that you'll never understand. But he would die for me." This is a reference to the song "I Would Die 4 U" by Prince.

Continuity[]

  • This episode continues the serialized format of season 18.
  • The race car from the episode "Pinewood Derby" can be seen on Randy's work table.
  • Butters has been allowed to return to school after burning down the gymnasium.
    • The Gymnasium still has damage caused by the fire.
  • This episode references "Gluten Free Ebola" first as Randy continuing to dress as Lorde (having done so at a party) and second when Randy drinks a Gluten-Free Pabst Blue Ribbon.
  • Randy's soiled shorts as well as the backing track to "Push (Feeling Good on a Wednesday) reveals he is still loyal to Tween Wave music, discussed in "You're Getting Old".
  • "Cissy" becomes a derogatory term for a cisgender person who does not accept transgenders. This is similar to how "n***er-guy" became, in "With Apologies to Jesse Jackson", a derogatory term for white people who use the N-word.
  • The third restroom is seen in later episodes such as "The Magic Bush".

Goofs[]
