Edward "Ted" Moore Kennedy was a United States Senator from Massachusetts, serving from 1962 until August 25th, 2009. The younger brother of John F. Kennedy and uncle of John F. Kennedy Jr., he was known for his charismatic oratory skills, he often worked hard for compromise between Democrats and Republicans. Although long suspected to run for president like his brothers, after an car accident in 1969 leaving passenger Mary Jo Kopechne dead, he avoided the nomination for several years. He finally made an attempt in 1980, but lost the Democratic nomination to incumbent Jimmy Carter.
