Season Twelve was announced on September 8, 2005[1], and premiered on March 12, 2008. It contained fourteen episodes, like its predecessor and aired in two halves with seven episodes at the start of 2008 and the other seven towards the end of the year. The second half began on October 8, 2008.

In Canada, Season Twelve began on March 28, 2008 with the first half finished on May 9, 2008. The second half started on October 17, 2008 and finished on November 28, 2008.

This season featured a new opening for the first time since Season Six. It begins with the characters falling into place and various clips playing out. The characters sing their lines with movement over four minimized versions of the clips. There was also a new crowd scene. The theme tune remained the same however. This is the second season that Kenny survived every episode (first based on South Park Studios' count.)

This season also marked the return of Herbert Garrison after a few years under his female persona Janet, although Garrison suffered role decline until Season Nineteen.
