Trivia

• On July 23rd, 2014, an uncensored version of the episode was aired on television. It is unknown if this was intentional or just a mistake. This was probably intentional as the uncensored version aired yet again on August 28th, 2014. The episode was aired uncensored yet again on October 29th, 2014 and about a year later on October 28th, 2015. Almost 4 years later, on September 26th, 2019, the uncensored version of the episode aired yet again, despite having a TV-14 rating. The uncensored episode played yet again on October 30th, 2019, one day before Halloween. It's likely that Comedy Central will never censor this episode again. 
• Zombie films were first parodied in "Pinkeye".
• Mayor McDaniels' assistant Ted was killed-off in this episode. A character with his appearance made a cameo in "Sexual Healing", but this is likely a goof.
• When the boys get to Evergreen, the men there question Eric Cartman on his feat of jumping 30, and then 50, homeless people in a single jump. This is a parody of The Brave Little Tailor from Grimms' Fairy Tails, or the Disney adaption of it, in which a tailor that kills seven flies with one blow is accidentally mistaken as a man that killed seven men with one blow, and through sheer cunning is forced to take on ever more daring feats, such as killing giants, until he eventually becomes a king in his own right.
  • The first giant the tailor "defeats" in a series of challenges invites the tailor to into his home and gives him a bed for the night. Later he tries to kill him by crushing him, not entirely unlike how the one man in Evergreen attempted to murder his ex-homeless wife by burning her alive in her bed as she slept.
  • The tailor, however, survives because he became uncomfortable with the bed's hugeness and slept in the corner. Upon seeing the tailor alive, all of the giants in the area flee. Naturally, when Christine rises form the rubble, burned but alive, with an assault rifle, she guns the men down instead.
• The Evergreen men's description of the "homeless problem" as people who "fed off their change" until they earned enough money to afford to rent or buy property of their own is not entirely dissimilar to the actual profession of panhandling, where individuals will often have their own area in which they work and can, in some cases, even make up into the thousands of dollars (or USD equivalent or worth). However, this is much more evident in India and China then it is in, say, the United States in general.
• The boys parody the song California Love sang by late rap artist Tupac Shakur.
• During the California song, Cartman says "Right by Matt's house, you can chill if you're homeless". This is a reference to Matt Stone, one of the creators of South Park.
• Sarah's mom from "Lil' Crime Stoppers" makes a cameo appearance on the roof.
• The term "change" has been said over 80 times, mostly by the homeless.

References to Popular Culture

• The name of this episode parodies the 1968 science fiction/drama movie Night of the Living Dead.
• This episode parodies George A. Romero's zombie movies: the scene with the scientist in his house explaining the physiology of homeless people is almost completely identical to a scene from Romero's 1985 movie Day of the Dead, and the adults being stranded on the roof of the Community Center plus the modifying of the bus mimics events in the 2004 remake of Dawn Of The Dead.
  • The scene where Randy guards, and subsequently kills Glenn, is a parody of a similar scene in Dawn of the Dead, wherein Roger is killed by Peter.
  • The scene where the scientist tries to commit suicide by shooting himself several times is also a reference to Day of the Dead, where the scientist was killed by soldiers by an excessive amount of bullets.
  • The idea for the homeless may have been from the movie Gangs of the Dead where the homeless were the first ones to become zombies.

Continuity

• The lesbian that Mrs. Garrison has sex with in the previous episode "D-Yikes!", Alyson, is seen jogging in California.
• Some of the homeless people seen in this episode appeared in "Naughty Ninjas".
