Trivia

• The episode's title is a play on the title for The Dark Knight Rises, the final film in Christopher Nolan's Batman film trilogy, which was announced only days before the episode aired.
• In this episode, after 1 year and 8 months of waiting, it was finally revealed that Mysterion's identity is Kenny McCormick.
• Cthulhu, along with the monsters attacking and the concept of madness spreading are based in HP Lovecraft's works.
• This is the first time Mysterion is shown laughing and smiling; this is because he thought it would be unbelievably funny to piss Cartman off if he chose to keeping calling the group "Coon and Friends".
• Cartman admits that he'd much rather be a complete dick while continuing hurting others and plotting revenge than redeem himself to the Friends.
• Stan's grampa had used Kenny's line, "Pull the trigger, you pussy", in the episode "Quintuplets 2000", with the intention of an FBI agent putting him out of his misery.
• Because Kenny is Mysterion and speaks un-muffled, this is one of the few episodes where he gets censored.
• When the McCormicks are found to have been involved in the Cthulhu cult meetings, Kenny inadvertently slips back into his normal voice, provided by Eric Stough to say the line "What the fuck?".
• Mrs. McCormick is now working at the Olive Garden restaurant.
• When Hindsight says that he is going to kill Coon and Friends, Mysterion tells him to go ahead. Kenny's bravery is the reference to the fact that he dies so often that as a result he is not afraid to die.
• Other than Kenny, the identities of Mosquito (Clyde) and The Human Kite (Kyle) are revealed, leaving Bradley as Mint Berry Crunch.
• Kyle is not actually revealed as The Human Kite until the next episode, but when he says "You bastards!" shortly after Kenny got killed, it would have been a safe assumption.
• Captain Hindsight is drinking a bottle of The Makallan 12 year old single malt Scotch whiskey, a respelling of The Macallan.
• This episode marks the second time that Kenny dies and then deliberately reappears alive later on, the first one being "Red Sleigh Down" (in earlier episodes he occasionally reappeared as a result of using stock footage, such as in "City on the Edge of Forever (Flashbacks).
• When Timmy leaves Cartman's basement, some of the others gather around him, most likely helping him up the stairs.

References to Popular Culture

• The Coon interacting with Cthulhu while on his belly, as well as the song playing while flying with Cthulhu, is a reference to Hayao Miyazaki's 1988 film Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro).
• When the Coon and Cthulhu go after their enemies, references Sebastian and luck dragon Falkor scaring the bullies.
• The scene at the beginning with the small question marks flying around the large question mark is a reference to the introduction to Batman Begins.
• The "What Should I Do?" segment during the episode is a reference to the LeBron James commercials that aired on U.S. television around the time of this episode's release.
• In Clyde's room, there is a headlight shaped like the Millennium falcon from the Star Wars films, as well as a poster with the title "Gunslave Wing", an obvious reference to the anime Mobile Suit Gundam Wing with the robot on the poster resembling Wing Zero.
• When Kyle (as the Human Kite) clicks on the newspaper listing showing '10 arrested in South Park' if you pause it at the right time you will see the site they were on was called 'Easypedia', which is an actual website.
• The style of the in-episode comic-books artistically resembles Eric Powell's comic "The Goon", whilst classic Silver Age of Comics style adverts can also be seen as the camera pans across the comic pages.
• Mint-Berry Crunch's alien father resembles pop singer Limahl. Limahl sang the title theme for the movie The NeverEnding Story.

Continuity

• This episode is preceded by "Coon 2: Hindsight".
• During his conversation with Captain Hindsight, Kenny mentions having seen Heaven and Hell. He was sent to Heaven and Hell during the events of "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut", and to Heaven in "Best Friends Forever".
• This episode shows that Kenny is aware of his abnormally frequent deaths. Previous hints at this have been seen in "Tweek vs. Craig" when he refused to go into shop class, in "Cherokee Hair Tampons" when he gets angry at Stan for mourning over the seemingly imminent death of Kyle but never seeming to care when he dies all the time and in "Best Friends Forever" where his will begins with "In the highly likely event of my death....".
• This episode also confirms that nobody but his parents remembers Kenny's- this contradicts various other episodes, among which are "Fourth Grade", "Chef Goes Nanners" and "Cartmanland" where somebody has mentioned it offhandedly.
• A few minor characters from older episodes reappear as members of the Cthulhu cult:
  • The two Star Trek nerds from "Fourth Grade"
  • Mr. Adler from "Tweek vs. Craig"
  • The four Goth Kids
  • Randy's co-worker Nelson
• While manipulating Cthulhu, the Coon destroys various places, including a Synagogue, a truck full of hippies, San Francisco, and the Burning Man festival.
• San Francisco was previously destroyed in Season 10's episode "Smug Alert!".

Goofs

• Timmy is able to get up and down the basement staircase without any problems despite his wheelchair and the suit he wears. But we can assume Timmy is helped up the stairs by the others as they crowd around him when they go to leave.
• When Cartman (The Coon) is talking to Cthulhu on the broken down roller coaster and his image is reflecting off Cthulhu's eye, the parting in his hair is on the left in the reflection. Then he turns around, and when he turns back his parting is on the right in his reflection.
