Although "Hooked on Monkey Phonics" was the last episode to feature newly recorded lines from Mary Kay Bergman, this episode is the last to feature her voice being that the album the songs in this episode come from was recorded well before Bergman's death.
Tolkien Black and Bill Allen are permanently removed from the 3rd grade classroom starting from this episode.
Tolkien is seen again in the 4th grade classroom starting from "Fourth Grade", though Bill isn't.
After seeing this episode, Courteney Cox thanked them for "mentioning her in that episode" (referring to Mr. Broflovski's line in "Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel") at a dinner for a mutual friend.
While most of the songs are featured on the CD, the only song not featured from the episode is Jesus and Santa's Christmas Medley. It was going to be on the CD, but some of the songs could not be legally cleared in time.
In "Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo" the title song was slightly different. In that episode the line "So therefore vicariously he loves you" was "Even if you're a Jew". Though Kyle did sing the "vicariously" lyric earlier in that episode.
Mr. Hankey is said to live in the sewers but is living in a pink Christmas house so every Christmas he comes up that toilet.
Jesus and Santa, despite having fought each other in the second short, sang together in the episode.
Despite being one of the most musical characters on South Park, and voiced by a professional musician, Chef neither sings nor appears.
As well as Kenny being crushed by the falling chandelier, Stan and Kyle nearly die after Shelly takes after them with a piano when they mock her during her segment.
In the song "Merry Fucking Christmas", Mr. Garrison sings about bringing Christmas to the Middle East. This was eventually done three seasons later in "Red Sleigh Down", which implies Mr. Garrison was not successful (then again, since it is just a song, it was possible that he did not actually go there, just sung about going there).
Ms. Crabtree's left hand was not seen during her appearance towards the end of the episode. It actually does get cut off in the episode "Cartman's Incredible Gift".
In September 2008, Russian prosecutors filed a motion to ban the series based on complaints received about this episode. The TV station was allowed to keep its license by agreeing not to re-air the program.[1]

Before and after every commercial break, a live-action segment featuring a news anchor is shown, saying "Fighting the frizzies, at eleven." This is a reference to a bootleg tape of The Star Wars Holiday Special which is the source for most of the bootlegs currently available online. The original tape featured a brief clip at the end from WCBS-TV featuring newscaster Rolland Smith informing viewers, "Fighting the frizzies, at eleven." As a novelty, those who reproduce the tape for others have customarily left this unusual clip intact, rather than editing it out. However, while the original news ad was apparently referring to "frizzy" hair, the ending credits of this episode of South Park features the news anchor boxing a man in a giant fuzzy suit.
The song that Santa sings that Jesus says is not about Christmas is "Rio" by the Brit-pop band Duran Duran.
The duet is a reference to the 1987 Dustin Hoffman/Warren Beatty spy comedy film Ishtar.
