J. J. Franzen is a crew member on South Park currently serving as the show's Chief Information Officer, or CIO, a role which he has held since 2011, filling the same role on South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, South Park: The Stick of Truth and South Park: Phone Destroyer.

He has also been previously credited as the show's technology supervisor (2004 - 2010) email/internet/electronic information office, or EIEIO (2000 - 2003) and systems administrator (1998 - 2000) during his time with South Park. He described the growth of his role with the show as taking "on more and more responsibility until [he became] responsible for all the IT infrastructure necessary to produce the show."[1]

Franzen also spends time working as a game developer, often working with independent developers on multiple projects, utilizing multiple skills, and is particularly interested n AR/VR projects.

His former job title, email/internet/electronic information office, was initially a joke so that he could have a business card that said "EIEIO".[2]

In the DVD commentary for "Fourth Grade", Matt Stone confirms that the Star Trek nerds are based on the two "systems guys", Franzen and Sean Laverty, describing them as both Star Trek fans. An avatar created for Franzen's website by South Park Studios' art department resembles the brown-haired character.
