Trivia

• This episode marks the first time Stan Marsh and Kyle Broflovski are seen without their hats on. Stan's hair color had been seen in "A Very Crappy Christmas" but the actual hairstyle is not seen until this episode.
• This is the first episode in which Butters is grounded.

References to Popular Culture

• The milk company's computer is a reference to Star Trek: The Original Series. In Star Trek, the computer works similarly, with voice commands. It is also able to calculate results based on input and relay the results with a programmed voice.

Continuity

• Jonesy, a member of Skyler's band in "Timmy 2000", is one of the people sitting in the movie theater watching Grossout Comedy 8.
• The characters of South Park really do "eat with their butt" in "Red Hot Catholic Love".
• Trey Parker and Matt Stone's disdain of Ben Affleck is first shown in this episode. Ben Affleck would also appear in "Fat Butt and Pancake Head" and was mocked for his role in Pearl Harbor in the song "The End of an Act" in their movie Team America: World Police.

Goofs

• The Thompsons had claimed that their son's name was "Tommy", but one of the men at the reunion celebration said the boy was called "Billy".
• The Thompsons also claimed that their son was seven years old when he disappeared. However, they later claim that he was six years old when he disappeared.
  • Their son was said to have disappeared in 1982, but was also said to have been missing for over 20 years. However, this episode aired in November 2001, which is only 19 years after he is reported missing.
• When Ben Affleck is identified as their son, his shirt continually alternates between colors. One minute it is khaki, the next it is white, then it is khaki again.
• When Cartman has his picture taken, he drops his hat. In the next scene, he takes his hat from his back pocket, not the floor.
• In the last scene of this episode, Cartman is missing his double chin.
• In the beginning of the episode, Butters is shown walking up to get his picture taken. In the next shot, he is shown waiting in line in front of Kyle.
• The order of the kids in line to get their pictures taken changes often, and many kids disappear completely.
• When the kids were at Butters’ house the second time, Craig has yellow gloves on but they disappear in the next shot
• When Kyle says he never takes his hat off, it was shown that he once took it off in the episode "Super Best Friends".
• The subtitles on the episode displays Martha's name as "Marsha".

Kenny's Death

• After the Thompsons reunite with their son, Kenny and Cartman cross the street when a motorcyclist suddenly runs Kenny over, crushing him. Cartman is amused and Stan and Kyle do not say their usual lines. Earlier in the episode, it was reported that people were getting randomly squashed by motorcycles.

• The speech abnomarlities by the Thompsons are not present in the dubbing. Instead, generic fart noises are played during their dialogs at random.
• When apologizing to Ms. Choksondik, Cartman addresses her as "Choksoncock" over "Choksondik".
• TPS is renamed as "ASS".

Mandarin Chinese

• The Thompsons are referred to as "馬普撲夫妇" (Mǎ pǔ pū fū fù). "馬" is a hint on the identity of the missing son, "普撲" sounds like "噗噗" (Pū pū), the onomatopeia for farting or spluttering, and is in this context further aggravated with "夫妇" (lit. "man and wife", an honorific title used to address married couples).
• At the milk company, the Thompsons explains that "over eleven people worldwide suffer from TPS". In this dubbing, this number is changed to "11% of all people worldwide".
• Ben Affleck, the person identified as the Thompson's missing son, is changed to "馬英五", parodying former President of the Republic of China Ma Ying-jeou (then mayor of Taipei).
