Trivia[]

  • Some of the games in the arcade include Thirst for Blood, Smack Man, Fist Fighter, Farmer's Market, and Gang Wars.
  • The sign at the bowling alley spells Kyle Broflovski's name as Kile Barffloski.

References to Popular Culture[]

  • This episode tells the basic story of the rock band "The Libertines, with Stan taking the place(s) of Carl Barat/Pete Doherty, Kyle taking John Hassall's role, and Thad being Johnny Borell.
  • This episode's name is a pun on the video game Guitar Hero.
    • The songs the boys play in this episode are from Guitar Hero II, despite the fact that the in-episode game is referred to as the "original" Guitar Hero. The poster for the game is also modeled after Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.
    • The song that starts off the boys' journey to rock fame is "Carry On Wayward Son", a likely allusion to "More Than a Feeling" by Boston in the first Guitar Hero that was equivalently easy (even on Expert) but which gave many players immense satisfaction to beat and high score on early in the game.
  • When Randy demonstrates his guitar skills the amplifier he uses says "Vaux" on it spoofing the amplifier company Vox. The model he uses looks similar to the popular Vox AC30.
  • The guitar Randy plays is a Gibson Les Paul.
  • The system the boys play on looks like an extremely compact, light grey PS2 with non-visible controller ports and no markings (other than a yellow on/off button) whatsoever, even though they call it an Xbox. This is surprising since they show a real Xbox in other episodes. This is just the model of the 2001 Okama Gamesphere, excluding the branding and the actual sphere part of the console.
  • This episode parodies the history and common movie formula of bands splitting up and reforming.
  • The term "chasing the dragon" is slang for smoking heroin, referenced by the gameplay and aftereffects of Heroin Hero.
  • At the bar in the bowling alley, there is a sign that spoofs Budweiser, calling it Dudwiser.
  • The game Wolfi by Capscom at the EvGames is a parody of the Capcom game Ōkami. Also seen in the store are copies of Diablo II, StarCraft, strategy guides made by Primo, a parody of Prima Games, Twerpz for BendoTS (referencing Bratz and the Nintendo DS, respectively), an ad for an O-Box (parodying Xbox), and a poster and magazine cover that mentions Halo 5, which would not release until almost 8 years later.
  • Stan's game Cross Country Cruiser is most likely a reference to Cruis'n USA.
  • The Manager's appearance is based on that of Robert Ridgley's character Colonel James from the 1997 film Boogie Nights.
  • Though never released in arcade form, Custer's Revenge was a real Atari 2600 game that caused some controversy in 1982 for its subject matter: George Armstrong Custer (a general from the Civil War) raping a Native American woman tied to a pole.
    • The game shown on the screen of the Custer's Revenge cabinet is Breakout.
  • When Thad quits at the video arcade after an argument over which song to play, he begins snapping and singing "I quit" repeatedly - this is a reference when Jimmy quit his band at the ending of That Thing You Do!.
  • At the game store, magazines show Optimus Prime on the cover.
  • The song Stan and Kyle score 1,000,000 points on is not one of the hardest songs in the real Guitar Hero II game.
  • The following songs are featured in this episode:

Continuity[]

  • On the counter of the EvGames is a Mitsubishi Game Sphere, an updated version of the 2001 Okama Gamesphere. The name of the console is seen on the box art for Heroin Hero.
  • On the cover of Rehab Hero, Paris Hilton can be seen.
  • The song playing on the radio in Stan's driving game is the song "You and Me, Girl" from the Season Three episode, "Spontaneous Combustion".
  • When Randy is found playing Heroin Hero, he is shown to have been drinking S'moors beer, a common background element used throughout the show that references S'more Schnapps.

Goofs[]

  • Although Randy is shunned for trying to teach the boys how to play an actual guitar, they are seen playing instruments in various episodes in the series. The gag is based on a real event, according to the creator's commentary.
  • When Stan and Kyle are first shown playing Guitar Hero, we multiple times see a single scoreboard, but as the song ends, it shows a double scoreboard.
  • For most of the episode, we see any of the boys stuck at a multiplier maximum of x2, with the exception of the 100,000 scene, at which they were at a maxed out x8, indicating that the South Park version of the game also features some sort of Star Power feature. However, being stuck at x2 most of the time would make it fairly difficult to get any sort of really good score in the game.
  • During the first shot of Kyle playing Guitar Hero at the bowling alley, when the boys come up to play the game, the microphone is visible during the closeup view, yet absent during the wide shot.
  • When Stan and Kyle arrive at the pool party, Kyle points to Jake Jabs, who is seen with a tiger and a woman with short hair and magenta-colored bikini sitting next to him. Immediately, the producer calls everyone's attention to introduce the boys and the woman is now waist-deep in the middle of the pool.
  • As the boys walk through the party, a woman in a red bikini and cowboy hat and a woman in a turquoise blue bikini with short hair can be seen sitting in the large pool and remain there while Alex introduces the boys. After taking only a few steps forward the boys notice Jay Cutler and both women are now next to him and chatting.
  • At the pool party, a man with black frame glasses and a dark gray sports coat is seen sitting at a table by himself and looking depressed. When the camera view changes after Alex announces that the boys broke 100,000 points on guitar, the man is now on the other side of the pool, smiling and standing next to the woman with short hair in the magenta bikini. Finally, when Alex promises more sex and coke in the house, the man is back at the table looking depressed again and the woman is now chest-deep in the pool.
  • As Stan and Kyle were nearing their one million point goal, and when the score reaches 986,000 points, the '8' digit prematurely changes to '9', causing the score to appear as 996,000 points, before going back down to 990,000.
