Trivia

  • This is the first episode of Season Eighteen to not reference an earlier episode of the season.
  • The title of this episode is a pun on the Indian recipe Vindaloo.
  • This episode is based around the real virtual reality device Oculus Rift.
  • The boys and Butters Stotch are shown live-action for the first time in this episode, although there was also a live-action sequence with actors re-enacting the boys' boating experience in "I Should Have Never Gone Ziplining".
  • There is a brief signal loss effect in a long shot of South Park.

References to Popular Culture

  • Butters compared his rampage through town to the video game series Grand Theft Auto. This included both hijacking the car and trying to beat up a hooker to get her money: both events are actual elements of the gameplay in the GTA series.
  • The phrase "doing a total recall" has a double meaning; 1. Recalling all of the Oculus devices and 2. Ripping off the plot of the film Total Recall. The overall motive of the episode is also very close to that of the said film.
  • Another reference was The Matrix movie series; this includes Cartman's suit and sunglasses while visiting Butters in the hospital.
  • Cartman's has a poster of Mel Gibson from the film Braveheart during the live action scene. The poster was never scene in cartoon form but the film and star of the movie have been referenced many times during the series.

Continuity

  • This is the second time Chewbacca defense was used, except it was used in a variation.
  • This is the second time Butters has touched Wendy's boobs, although this time it happened off-screen, the first time being in "Bebe's Boobs Destroy Society".
  • This is the second time Butters has stood up against his parents grounding him, the first time being "The Ungroundable".
  • Stephen first used his belt to beat Butters in "Jared Has Aides".
