Trivia

  • This was voted the seventh best South Park episode of all time by fans.
  • One of the knives on display looks like a "Klingon" knife (called "D'k tahg") from "Star Trek". Also a "bat'leth" (Klingon Sword) is for sale.
  • At the beginning of the episode, the two men who are looking for the knives are actually the two nerds from "Fourth Grade".
  • This episode was the first episode to be released in HD, however, the HD version was only available on Xbox Live.
  • This is one of two episodes where Eric Cartman's penis is shown, the other being "Imaginationland, Episode II".
  • The style is based on the anime Ninja Scroll and similar styles of Japanese animation.
  • This episode aired almost a month after Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" at Super Bowl XXXVIII. At the end of the episode, the townspeople are enraged that their children saw Cartman naked, rather than being angry at the vulgar gore of Butters with a shuriken lodged in his eye; Trey Parker and Matt Stone's intention was to satirize the American public's ludicrous concern towards nudity and sexuality in entertainment rather than gratuitous violence and gore. Sheila's comment "This is what happens when the moral fabric of society breaks down" could be self-reflective of the meeting itself.
  • Sheila's comment "This is what happens when the moral fabric of society breaks down" is a reference to Trey and Matt's vision behind the show "People are born bastards and society barely keeps them inline."

References to Popular Culture

  • There is some resemblance to the Street Fighter series. Stan's ninja costume is exactly like Ryu's just with different colors. Jimmy's ninja costume is exactly like Sodom's just with a yellow shirt and no mask. Token's entire ninja look can be compared to Dee Jay; his attack looks like the animation from Dee Jay's Air Slasher attack. Clyde's ninja costume is similar to Adon. And Kyle's looks similar to Fei Long. Craig's outfit appears similar to Geki from the original Street Fighter, or Guy. Cartman's appearance is similar to E. Honda with Chun-Li's bracelets. Kenny's costume looks similar to Mortal Kombat's Raiden but his head is based on Ken's. Butters' ninja look resembles M. Bison. Chef's ninja look resembles Akuma, and the auctioneer is seen dressed like Gen. Additionally, Cartman's "ninja" name (Bulrog) may be a reference to Street Fighter character Balrog.
  • In the original airing of this episode, an unidentified individual talked about anime (and mentioned his favorite director) in the closed captions during the commercial break.
  • With the exception of Kenny's attack on Butters, the boys don't actually fight with the very dangerous weapons they've purchased. They're content to pretend to fire energy bursts from them, mimicking the Hadouken from the Street Fighter series.
  • The tattoo on Cartman's left arm 味 means "taste", and the subtitle 珍棒 means "rare stick", possibly a reference to a penis.
  • The fight scene between the eight boys mimics clips from various anime movies, mostly the Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie and some from the Street Fighter Alpha movie. Some proof of this is when Clyde charges up his power, he looks exactly how Ryu did charging up his power in the Street Fighter Alpha movie.
  • It is also worth noting that the anime scenes look and move in a manner extremely similar to Toei studio's godfather of fighting anime, Fist of the North Star (Hokuto no Ken). Professor Chaos in particular looks and behaves especially like Raoh the Conqueror and indeed just about every big anime baddie ever. Though his name and outfit pay particular homage to Doctor Doom, who isn't an anime character.
  • The song may be based on the 2nd Opening of Dragon Ball Z, WE GOTTA POWER.

"Anime" Names/Weapons

Character Kyle Cartman Kenny Stan Butters Craig Clyde Jimmy Token
Ninja Name Bunroku Bulrog Kensuke/Kenny (unintelligible) Shadowhachi Professor Chaos Ginza Not Given Not Given Black Chaku
Weapon Nunchaku Sai Shuriken Tonfa Energy Blasts Katana Kama, or sickles Eskrima, (also known as Kali Sticks) Nunchaku

Censorship

  • The shot of Cartman's penis was blurred-out in syndication.
  • The scene where two dogs pee and one dog poops on Butters is edited out in syndication.

Goofs

  • When the boys are looking at the weapons on the counter, the red nunchakus under the yellow ones keep disappearing when the camera angle changes.
  • One person refers to Cartman as "that fat little eight year old boy" at the end after Cartman inadvertently flashes the audience. However, the boys would be nine and in fourth grade ever since the middle of the fourth season.  A possible explanation for this could be the same as the explanation for the episode's resolution: Many of the adults in South Park are relatively unaware of what's going on with their children's private lives or simply aren't concerned.
  • Kyle's anime counterpart has black hair, whereas he really has auburn hair, as shown in How to Eat With Your Butt. However, this may be excusable because the boys are imagining their ideal selves and Kyle doesn't like his hair.
  • After Stan tries to pick out the ninja star with a pair of pliers, we see all four of the boys and Kyle tells Stan to "Stop dude! You're gonna scramble his brain!" If you look on the far right on the snowy tree closest to Kyle, we can see a black line in the shape of Butters eyebrow, If you watch closely, it moves exactly like the eyebrow on Butters when he moves his head.
  • When Craig, Token, Jimmy, Clyde, Cartman, Kenny, Kyle and Stan are fighting in anime, you can clearly see Jimmy jump. He should not be able to do this since he is crippled but could've done this using his hands for support, suggesting he has a level of enableability and intelligence. It could also be a similar circumstance where Kyle imagines his anime counterpart with black hair instead of his natural curly red color-It could just be an imagination of their ideal selves.
  • When the boys are walking away from Butters (after they told him he can't be a ninja), the red cloth on Cartman's right arm isn't there.
  • Stan already knew who Professor Chaos/Butters is, he learnt that secret on season 6 "My Future Self n' Me" but still seemed confused on who he is. However, he may have simply forgotten, as he believes that Butters was telling him that he was gay.
  • At the end in the community center, you can see Randy and Sharon behind a man to the left. When the man stands up Randy and Sharon have moved to the right, with the man being in between them. When it switches to most of the people again, it goes back to normal.
  • On the third left chair on the first row, you can see Wendy. After the first person close up, she is replaced by Red, and before Mr. Garrison speaks, no one is there.
  • When Cartman is walking across the stage his hair looks normal but when Cartman is shown from the back some of his hair is sticking up.
