Trivia
- Cartman rips on Scott Malkinson for having a lisp and diabetes. Kyle also has diabetes, as mentioned by his mom in Season 4's "Cherokee Hair Tampons". However, only Stan and Kyle know this, and as such wouldn't mention it.
- This marks the first time Wendy kissed Stan without him barfing on her.
- The school hall in which the kids dance is the same as the one in Middle Park Elementary, as seen in "Quest for Ratings".
- A clip from this episode is used for Stan and Kyle's line in the show's revised theme, first shown in the Season Fourteen opener "Sexual Healing".
- Despite having no musical or dancing talent until the end of this episode, Stan, Kyle, and Cartman all participated in musical scenes in South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, and Kenny proved himself to be a talented opera singer in "Quintuplets 2000".
- There is an episode of The Simpsons that is also entitled "Elementary School Musical".
- The song playing in the background during Bridon's basketball game is "Rock and Roll Part 2" by Gary Glitter.
- The song Wendy sings in the lunch room at the beginning of the episode resembles You Give Love a Bad Name by Bon Jovi.
References to Popular Culture
- This entire episode parodies High School Musical, a series of movies produced by Disney.
- The "Go With the Status Quo" song is a parody of the High School Musical song "Stick to the Status Quo".
- Bridon's wish to play basketball is a reversed reference to Zac Efron's High School Musical character Troy, because Troy plays basketball but wanted to be in the school musical.
- The dance moves of "Go With the Status Quo" are taken from the High School Musical song "All for One".
- "We're So Happy to Be in School Again" is a parody of "We're All in This Together".
- At the end of the episode, Kyle's hair is redesigned from his normal Jewfro to look like Corbin Bleu's hairstyle, who played the supporting part of Chad in High School Musical.
- When Bridon tries to run away, his father threatens to slap him and says "Go ahead, make my day", in reference to Clint Eastwood's Harry Calahan character in "Sudden Impact".
- In the final musical number, Kenny's parka is open, showing a T-shirt with the logo of The Rolling Stones.
Continuity
- At the beginning, when Jimmy Valmer (in response to the boys not knowing what High School Musical is) asks the boys where they have been, Craig replies "Peru", referencing "Pandemic" and "Pandemic 2: The Startling".
- Kyle is shown to be a good dancer at the end in this episode, however in Rainforest Shmainforest, Kyle proves to have absolutely no dancing talent, supposedly because of the fact he is Jewish (at least according to Cartman).
- He may have learnt how to dance since then, as seen in "Something You Can Do with Your Finger" and "Helen Keller! The Musical".
Goofs
- Craig is seen joining in with the rest of the school although he should, like the rest of the boys, have no knowledge of the new fad due being taken to Peru in "Pandemic". It's possible that he watched High School Musical before the boys did.
- Heidi Turner is wearing gloves when she says that Bridon Gueermo is coming in the lunchroom. A few scenes later, her gloves are off.
- Cartman decides to kill himself because of how dissapointed he is in the new fad. When he shows up to school the next morning, Kyle inquires him. Cartman says he went to sleep in his mom's car in the garage with the engine turned on. Stan asks him why he's alive, to which Cartman replies "Freakin' hybrids, man. They just don't do the trick anymore." However, in the season 10 episode "Smug Alert!", the town vows to never purchase hybrid cars again, meaning that Cartman's mom should not own a hybrid.
