This page contains trivia for "City Sushi". Remember, trivia must be factual, provable, and it is always best to cite your source for not-so-obvious trivia. If you would like to dispute a trivia point, please discuss it in the talk page.

Trivia[]

  • Janus is a Roman god generally depicted with two faces on the front and back of his head. Although he is considered the god of beginnings and endings, in this case, it is also a reference to Dr. Janus having multiple "faces" (personalities).
  • Eric Cartman, Stan Marsh, Kenny McCormick, and Kyle Broflovski have no speaking lines in this episode. They only appear once in the audience when Tuong Lu Kim and the Japanese man are talking about Asian diversity. As Kenny did not appear in the previous episode also, this marks the second episode in a row where Kenny does not do or say anything this season.
  • City Wok is not the only Chinese restaurant in South Park. There is also a P.F. Chang's.
  • A running gag throughout the episode is that the denizens of South Park are unaware of the difference between Chinese and Japanese people; they refer to City Sushi as a Chinese restaurant, but name the restaurant area Little Tokyo, which is Japanese.
  • Dr. Janus has at least eight split personalities, not including himself: The Old Man, Billy, The Evil Psychotic One, The Con Artist, Sexy One, The Pizza Man, The One Who Sings, and Lu Kim.
  • This is the second episode to air in June since the 2002 episode "The Simpsons Already Did It".
  • Tuong mentions that Japan has the highest suicide rate. Although Japan's suicide rate rose considerably during the Asian economic crisis of 1997-1998, it was ranked the 65th highest in 1990 and the 30th highest in 2019 according to Our World in Data, well below "the highest suicide rate". The country with the highest suicide rate is actually Greenland.
  • At the Asian Diversity Day event, City Sushi has a sign outside showing their lunch specials, consisting of Beef Teriyaki, Chicken Teriyaki, Shrimp Stir Fry, Tempura Udon, and Orange Chicken, all with a soda for $4.99 ($5.99 for Chicken Teriyaki).

References to Popular Culture[]

  • Butters Stotch references a line from the song "Convoy" by C.W. McCall while playing "Big Rig Butters".
  • When Butters films himself, it is a parody of Paranormal Activity, proven when Butters says, "This is like Paranormal."
  • The arrest of Dr. Janus references the final scene in Alfred Hitchcock's movie Psycho with him saying he, "would not even harm a fly".
  • When Dr. Janus is riding a tricycle, frightening Butters, and calling himself Billy, this is a reference to the Saw movies.
  • LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem" as well as the video are parodied during the intro of the Asian Diversity Awareness school assembly with Junichi Takiyama and Tuong Lu Kim.
  • In the scene where Dr. Janus says he has been scamming the town for 7 years, his computer's logo says "Bell". This could be a reference to the real-life computer company Dell. This has also appeared in other episodes, like "T.M.I.".
  • Dr. Janus' personality-jumping meltdown, complete with removal of a hairpiece, is likely a reference to the film The Stepfather, where actor Terry O'Quinn played a man who swapped identities frequently and eventually involuntarily, sometimes removing his hairpiece to distinguish.
  • When Janus stated that MPD is not real, this refers to a dispute among psychiatrists. Some believe that MPD does not exist, and others believe it is only caused by therapy for other disorders.
  • When Dr. Janus has his first meltdown he finishes by saying, "The horned toad says we should go to Mexico." This is a direct quote from Lone Watie, a Native-American character in the 1976 Clint Eastwood film, The Outlaw Josey Wales.
  • The portrait on the wall of the staircase during the chase scene is "Self-Portrait" by John Everett Millais.
  • One of Dr. Janus' personalities sings part of the jingle for Big Red chewing gum to Butters.
  • Dr. Janus mentions the Rape of Nanking while badmouthing Junichi, one of the worst atrocities of World War II and a point of friction between China and Japan.

Continuity[]

  • Butters previously underwent a psychiatric evaluation in "The Death of Eric Cartman", when his parents thought he was hallucinating and seeing a ghost.
  • The Stotches immediately dismiss their son's "troublemaking" as not because of their parenting, claiming they're "awesome", once again playing on the fact they are completely oblivious to how cold and harsh they treat him.
  • Once again Butters is blamed entirely (and grounded) for something he has little involvement in.
  • Inspector Butters was last seen in "Butters' Very Own Episode".
  • City Sushi owner Junichi Takiyama was first seen as the front end of the "HUMANCENTiPAD".
    • In "HUMANCENTiPAD", Takiyama states he cannot read English. However, in this episode, he reads a letter from Lu Kim. It is possible that he may have learned how to read English since the events of that episode.
  • Following the initial fight between Takiyama and Lu Kim, a sign can later be seen inside City Sushi, reading "Management reserves the right to refuse service to Chinese". This sign was not seen before the initial fight.
  • When Butters is running up the stairs of Dr. Janus' house, Dr. Janus says, "You can't run forever!" This line was said by Billy Thompson in "Insheeption" directed towards Mr. Mackey as a kid. One of Janus' personalities is called Billy.
  • Bradley Biggle can be seen in the crowd at assembly, implying that he has returned since his last appearance, which was in "Coon vs. Coon & Friends".
  • While burning his play clothes, Butters is stopped before destroying his Professor Chaos costume due to Dr. Janus' interruption. Professor Chaos would return in the Season Sixteen episode "Butterballs".

Goofs[]

  • When Mr. Mackey is addressing the school at the Asian Diversity assembly, many children can be seen twice or more in the crowd, as well as some alternate versions of characters. This includes Tommy Turner, Bill Allen, Sally Turner, Jenny, Kevin Stoley, Nate, Francis, and some unnamed characters.
  • After Butters is diagnosed with multiple personality disorder, Linda and Stephen find their son pretending to be a truck driver in their backyard. Butters' gear shifter is positioned on his left-hand side, which is an error unless he is pretending to drive a truck with the wheel on the right hand seat (Japanese, British, etc.).
  • The map shown during the school assembly contains multiple factual errors:
    • The Russian island of Sakhalin is drawn as part of Japan.
    • North and South Korea are drawn as a single country.
    • No borders are marked for Bhutan, East Timor and Nepal. Other smaller countries like Maldives and Singapore are not labelled.
    • Both the Peninsular and East Malaysia are drawn with different colors, with East Malaysia being labelled as Brunei.
