Trivia

  • In the commentary, Trey Parker remarks that this has to be the first time a TV show has had "Fuck Jesus" in it, even bleeped. However, South Park has done this before, in season three's "Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics", when Santa says, "Fuck you, Jesus!" during their Christmas Medley.
  • Token Black's bass guitar has five strings. Most bass guitars have four strings, but those with more are not uncommon.
  • MOOP is an acronym for "Matter Out of Place", referring to litter and garbage found in forests and beaches.
  • Gold, frankincense, and myrrh were the gifts given at Jesus' birth. Frankincense and myrrh are plants in Africa and the Middle East used for soap and perfume.

References to Popular Culture

  • When Cartman takes the picture for the Faith + 1 cover, he tells Token and Butters to just "stand in random places." This may be a reference to U2's Joshua Tree album.
  • Token's bass is fashioned after the bass Rudy played in the cartoon series Fat Albert.
  • Eric Cartman on the bus writing lyrics onto his palm is taken from the film 8 Mile, when Eminem does the same thing on his way to a rap contest.
  • This is the second time Capitol Records in Hollywood has been parodied. In "Chef Aid", it was called Capitalist Records, but didn't have the distinctive record-stack shape shown in this episode. Here it has the record-stack shape, but is called Faith Records.
  • There is an actual Christian boy band called Plus One.
  • Faith + 1's songs are blatant rip-offs of pop ballads, with the lyrics changed.
    • "Three Times My Savior" is based on "Three Times a Lady" by Lionel Richie.
    • "I Wasn't Born Again Yesterday" was based on "I've Never Been To Me" by Charlene.
    • "Jesus Baby" is based on "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind)" by The Delfonics.

Musicians on Strike with Moop

  • Metallica - The band is a notorious opponent of music piracy. In 2000, they attempted to sue both the Napster file-sharing network and several US universities for not blocking the download of Metallica songs. The result was a public relations disaster for the band, who were the subject of dozens of online parodies of an aging rock band that appeared to be selfish and out of touch with its fans.
  • Alanis Morissette
  • Blink-182
  • Britney Spears
  • Meat Loaf
  • Ozzy Osbourne
  • Rancid
  • Missy Elliot
  • The Lords of The Underworld - A fictional band, from the previous South Park episode "Timmy 2000".

Goofs

  • For a fraction of a second before Token swings at Cartman, his fists enlarge in width.
