Trivia

• Originally, Cartman was supposed to receive a gun during his stint as a deputy police officer, but Comedy Central's censors were reluctant to show a child with a firearm. The Season One episode "Volcano" depicted children wielding firearms, but it was allowed then as the usage was considered less controversial by Comedy Central.
• The episode was originally titled "Chickenfucker", but it was changed as Comedy Central did not want any profane wording in any of its titles.
• In Mr. Garrison's classroom, the alphabet poster above the chalkboard is Spanish and translates to the phrase, "Oh my God, they killed Kenny! You bastards!"
• In the scene where Officer Barbrady cannot read the Stop sign, the symbols translate to "idiot" in Korean.
• This is the first episode in which Cartman demands people to respect his "authoritah!", a catchphrase used through later episodes as a joke.
• The driver of the truck that Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Officer Barbrady are in at the end appears to be Jesus.
• A man who was stopped by Cartman for prostitution is the same man who yelled "Goddamn, that's a big fat ass!" in the Season One episode, "Weight Gain 4000".
• A man who was thrown to the TV market is the man who was yelling at Jimbo in the Season One episode, "Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo".
• At the end, it says Producer Robert Pooner, who is a reporter later in the show.
• When the Bookmobile Driver first appears and makes his disappearance, it seems to have taken 6 seconds to have sex with a chicken.
• Stephen Stotch makes his first appearance as one of the citizens rioting and looting after Barbrady quits his job. The differences from his current appearance include rosy cheeks and a lack of tie.
• The Bookmobile Driver is shown bleeding after Barbrady hits him with the nightstick. Whether he died or was knocked out is unknown.
• The Bookmobile Driver may have deduced Barbrady's inability to read by seeing him struggle with street signs and other public things that have words on them.
• At the press conference, three photos can be seen hanging on the backwall, one is Barbrady, the other two are former sheriffs of South Park, and they all look alike.
• Randy's appearance has been redesigned in this episode and stays the same from then on.

References to Popular Culture

• This episode parodies the long running reality television series COPS which has aired since 1989. The television show follows real police officers during their patrols.
• According to Mr. Garrison, popular TV talk show host Oprah Winfrey has large breasts.
• For his book report, Cartman had to read the C.S. Lewis book The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.
• Barbrady's book report is on the P.D. Eastman children's book Go, Dog. Go! it was originally published in 1961. It's about driving dogs.
• One of the children out at recess is playing with a Mega Man toy; these are a parody of the Power Rangers franchise, and named after the video game character/series Mega Man.
• When captured, the Booktastic Bookmobile driver is wearing a mask of Richard Nixon, the 37th President of the United States.
• As a gift to Officer Barbrady for capturing him, the Bookmobile driver gives him a copy of the 1957 Ayn Rand novel Atlas Shrugged. The story takes place in a dystopian future where the worlds leading innovators cease working, not wishing to have their talents exploited by society any longer.
• There is a picture of Tom Wopat in the closing credits. He is best known for his role as Luke Duke on the television show The Dukes of Hazzard.
• Oprah's bra size is 38C

Goofs

• Bebe is seen at the petting zoo in her normal clothes. When seen later, she is running after a rabbit, this time, wearing a blue shirt instead of a red one.
• Barbrady is unable to read, but can quote sections of a deputizing law. How he knew the quote without reading is unknown, though he may have been told.
• Despite the fact that the Bookmobile Driver admits he had sex with chickens just to encourage Barbrady to learn to read, he actually performs the crime BEFORE Barbrady admitted to the town he was illiterate.
• Officer Barbrady likely would not have been sent to the third grade class to learn how to read, as third graders have already learned how to read. He likely would have been sent to the first or second grades instead. 

Kenny's Death

• During the parade (which happens during the credits), a tree falls and crushes Kenny, killing him.
• During the episode (before the credits), Kenny has many situations when it seems like he's dead but is actually okay. When the townspeople were rioting a car flipped over and crushed him; he just came out the door of the car unharmed. When Officer Barbrady kicked Kenny on the swing who hit a brick wall, he was okay. When shot in the shoulder, he still remained okay. Stan always started saying his usual phrase when it seemed like he was dead by saying, "Oh my God, they killed –" but finishing with "oh nevermind" when he realized Kenny emerged unharmed. This occurs twice. Eventually, he says, "Oh my God, they killed... Goddammit!" when he recognizes that Kenny is surviving these experiences.
