Trivia

  • Cartman uses and alters the line "They mostly come at night; mostly" from the film Aliens in this episode.
  • Skyler and his band reappear in "Timmy 2000".
  • First episode in the meteor shower story arc.
  • This is the first episode of South Park not to feature Kenny, Kyle, or Stan.
  • This is the only episode of the trilogy without Kyle.
  • When Skyler notices his Guitar after Shelly pulls it apart the name of the litter box the guitar is in says "Kitty" however when Skyler picks up the broken Guitar the litter box says "Kitty Poo Poo".
  • Shelly calls Eric many things such as "Turd-man of Alcatraz", which is an obvious reference to the Birdman of Alcatraz, "Turd Rock from the Sun", a reference to Third Rock from the Sun, and "Richard the Turd."
  • The fat orange and black cat in the alley looks quite a bit like Garfield.
  • The music that Mr Kitty plays on the stereo is the same as the one in the gay animal disco in "Big Gay Al's Big Gay Boat Ride".
  • In the cat party, Mr. Kitty's butt is peach for some seconds.

References to Popular Culture

  • Cartman is playing Wild Wild West, which was released in theatres June 30, 1999 less than a month after this episode aired. The movie starred Will Smith and was based on the 1965 television series The Wild Wild West.
  • Rumperstumpskin is holding "Selma Hayek" hostage and is threatening to kill her and the President. Selma Hayek played the role of Rita Escobar the female lead in the film. The plot to the Wild Wild West filmed involved the main villain kidnapping Escobar and the President.
  • Artimus Cylde Frog wants to play "Slip 'n' Slide" in Selma Hayek's pants. Clearly he is not talking about the Slip 'n' Slide a children's toy that involves slipping down a wet sheet of plastic. No, he's talking about a sexual act involving two men and one anus (the gender belonging to that anus is a matter of your preference), guy number one performs anal sex until ejaculation and guy number two then has anal sex after, using guy number ones semen as lube.
  • Cartman is playing the role of Captain James West, the hero of the film Wild Wild West played by Will Smith.
  • Cartman "saves the day" by stopping a giant mechanical spider then he begins singing a very bastardized version of the song Wild Wild West which was written and performed by Will Smith. It was featured on the Wild Wild West soundtrack. The main villain in Wild Wild West tries to complete his mad scheme of taking over the United States with a giant mechanical spider.
  • Cartman hesitantly gives his mother an Eskimo kiss a form of expression between Inuit, usually family, involving rubbing noses.
  • Cartman likens Shelly's abuses like "those nanny videos on TV", this is in reference to Dateline NBC who at the time of these episode aired was doing a series of episodes focusing on nanny abuse.
  • Cartman was watching the 1986 film Aliens, the scene was identical to a similar scene (and the line "They mostly come out at night... Mostly") was directly from the movie. The scene involves Newt (Carrie Henn) telling Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) about the alien creatures that live on the planet. He uses that line many times in many different ways, such as to describe a meteor shower.
  • Shelly changes the channel to Friends a sit-com that ran from 1994-2004. It was about a group of friends who lived in Manhattan together.
  • The Wild Animal Program that Cartman watches is a parody of the Wild Kingdom a nature series that ran from 1963 to 1988.
  • Shelly gets even more inventive with her turd insults throughout the episode:
    • "Turdman of Alcatraz", which is a parody of the Birdman of Alcatraz, who was Robert Franklin Stroud, a prisoner who kept birds as a hobby while in prison.
    • Astroturd is a play on Astroturf which is an artificial surface made to resemble grass, commonly used in Baseball fields and other sporting events. It was invented in 1965 by Donald L. Elbert, James M. Faria, and Robert T. Wright, employees of Monsanto Company.
    • Turd Rock from the Sun is a play on the name of the sit-com 3rd Rock from the Sun which ran from 1996-2001. It was about three aliens who come to Earth, disguised as humans in an attempt to learn about the Earth which they believed to be the least important planet in the universe.
    • Richard the Turd which is a play on Richard the Third the King of England from 1483-1485, he was the subject of a play by William Shakespeare.
    • Turdledove, which is a play on the Turtle Dove a breed of bird native to Turkey and Norther Africa.
  • Cartman gives Kitty Catnip a plant that is like a narcotic to felines.
  • When Cartman snaps a photo of Shelly kissing Skyler he shouts "Ha ha, charade you are! Looks like you're the turd now!" This is a play on a lyric from the Pink Floyd song Pigs (Three Different Ones) from their 1977 album Animals. The song uses the phrase "ha ha, charade you are!" multiple times during the song.
  • Cartman tells Mr. Kitty that she is his only hope in much the same way that Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) does in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope when she records a message asking Obi-Wan Kenobi for help into R2D2.
  • The cats are doing catnip like lines of Cocaine, orgies and cocaine parties are a stereotype of the 1970s.
