Smug Alert! "Smug Alert!/Trivia" "Cartoon Wars Part I/Trivia" "Cartoon Wars Part II/Trivia" Cartoon Wars Part II

This page contains trivia for "Cartoon Wars Part I". Remember, trivia must be factual, provable, and it is always best to cite your source for not-so-obvious trivia. If you would like to dispute a trivia point, please discuss it in the talk page.

Trivia[]

  • This episode is a reference to the 2005 Muhammad cartoons crisis, where Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published cartoons depicting the Islamic prophet Muhammad. The controversy escalated to protests worldwide leading to over 200 deaths.
  • A trailer is included at the end of the episode with parts of the next episode made to look more dramatic, such as Cartman and Kyle's fight.
  • This episode, along with "Cartoon Wars Part II", addresses Matt and Trey's dislike for Family Guy. Like Cartman, they dislike the show for the show's seemingly constant and random jokes, which bear little relevance to the plot of the episodes. However, they respect it for its fans and ability to generate a quick laugh, and still defend the show's constant desire to make light of any and all subjects, feeling that either everything should be open for mocking or nothing at all. On the DVD audio commentary, Parker states "we totally understand that people love it, that's why we put it in the show, we understand that it speaks to some people and it can just be a simple laugh and that's great and we certainly don't think it should be taken off the air or anything like that, we just don't respect it in terms of writing". He later refers to the writers behind the show as "smart" but emphatically criticizes their overuse of "gag-humor".
  • In the end where the announcer asks, "Or will Comedy Central puss out," in regards to showing Muhammad, this is a reference to the fact that Comedy Central refused to allow Muhammad to be shown uncensored in this episode, despite requests from Matt and Trey.
  • Despite being censored in the Family Guy segment, Muhammad is still seen uncensored in the background of the intro. It is likely that the contents of the intro were merely overlooked by Comedy Central.
  • This episode received positive feedback by Simpsons creator Matt Groening, and King of the Hill creator Mike Judge. Matt Groening liked it so much that flowers were sent to Trey and Matt. In the next episode, an imitation of the King of the Hill production building makes a cameo, joining the Bart Simpson likeness and arguably fulfilling the "Cartoon Wars" title.
  • In 2012 Seth MacFarlane did an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine. In the interview, when asked about South Park, Seth MacFarlane would say that he thought the episode about Family Guy was funny yet he did not understand the personal hatred that seemed to come his way from the South Park writers and creators.
  • This episode along with the second parter were not available on HBO Max, Paramount Plus and the South Park Studios official website due to both episodes referencing the prophet Muhammad. Because of this, "A Million Little Fibers" was listed as Episode 3 in the playlist.

References to Popular Culture[]

  • Kyle's dream of Ike getting blown up by a nuclear bomb is a reference to Sarah Connor's nightmare in Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
  • When they watch Family Guy on a TiVo, it is a reference to TiVo where there is also a THX certified-TiVo and was found in 1997. TiVo is used extensively in the series, usually when a character needs to control their television in some manner.

Continuity[]

  • When Kyle shouts to Stan "What's going on this time?" he was referencing the episode "Two Days Before the Day After Tomorrow" where everyone was running around screaming and panicking similar to this. Also, someone shouts "Get to the community center, again!"
  • Family Guy appears once again after this (and the next) episode. In the episode "Canada on Strike", it appears on the television.

Goofs[]

  • The rear wheel of Cartman's big wheel gets superimposed over Kyle's body when he walks in front of it during their argument on the highway.
  • DogPoo Petuski, Heidi Turner and Bill Allen are seen twice in the assembly.
