Randy Marsh buys a Blockbuster store for $10,000 in the belief it will be successful. His aspirations of becoming a business owner are crushed when video rental stores are replaced by Redbox vending machines and streaming internet video.
Randy hires his family to work on Halloween night, but due to no customers showing up, he quickly becomes insane, seeing "ghosts" and mimicking the character Jack Torrance from the Stephen King novel and movie The Shining.
Shelly Marsh sets the store on fire and the family collects an insurance claim with seemingly no questions asked.
- In real-life, Blockbuster was a very popular rental company for video games and films and was widely popular in the 1980s and 1990s. In the 2000s, Blockbuster struggled in business due to streaming platforms such as Netflix and Hulu were becoming popular. In 2010, Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy and closed almost all of its remaining stores throughout the U.S. and only has one store left in operation located in Bend, Oregon.
