- The episode title is a pun of the horror movie title A Nightmare on Elm Street and the iPad's camera feature.
- Blockbuster was a successful video rental store, until streaming video through the internet made watching movies easier. Last year, Blockbuster went bankrupt and was sold to Dish Network,[1] referenced by Randy's acquisition of the company.
- Butters Stotch dressed up as the 'Wereprechaun'. This was a scrapped idea mentioned during the "Imaginationland" DVD commentary.
- In the promo, Kenny's voice, whilst dressed as Iron Man, is muffled as if he were in his parka. In the actual episode, his lines are clear, albeit slightly masked by a voice-changer.
- Kenny's unhooded voice is performed by Matt Stone in place of Eric Stough who provided it for the episode "The Jeffersons".
- Jimmy Valmer's stuttering of some of the lyrics to "Gangnam Style" refers to actual stuttering in the song.
- Kum & Go is a real convenience store chain, indeed as the episode ran they tweeted that the first person to send them a screenshot of their debut on South Park would receive a $10 gift card.[2]
- This is one of the few episodes where you hear Kenny's voice.
- Kenny uses a paper bag instead of a plastic pumpkin-shaped pail due to his economic status.
- Kenny is shown with ears for the first time in this episode.
References to Popular Culture
- The boys are dressed like Marvel/Disney Super Heroes: Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America, and Thor. This is a reference to the recent film The Avengers.
- Eric Cartman is mistaken for LGBT celebrities; Bruce Vilanch, Chaz Bono, Harvey Fierstein, as well as reality TV personality Honey Boo Boo, when the boys are trick-or-treating.
- The names Stan gives his "torturers" are Bruce, Tony, and Curt. The former two reference the Hulk's and Iron Man's respective alter egos, Bruce Banner and Tony Stark, while the latter is a nod towards the character Curt Vaughan from the film The Cabin in the Woods, portrayed by Chris Hemsworth who also played Thor in The Avengers.
- Stan's quote, 'Stay gold' is from the novel and film The Outsiders where the protagonist Johnny tells Ponyboy to, 'Stay Gold'. This was originally from the novel Gone With the Wind, which was also mentioned in the book.
- Many scenes of Randy in Blockbuster and when he freezes at the end are references to the 1980 film The Shining.
- "Monster Mash" is a 1962 novelty song written and performed by Bobby "Boris" Pickett. The police quote this song in the hospital when mentioning the Halloween party.
- There are multiple references to the music video for the song "Gangnam Style" by South Korean rapper PSY.
- The female ghost from the 1980s was looking for the Tom Hanks movie Turner & Hooch, released in 1989.
- Randy stares blankly towards a demonstration television showcasing Seth McFarlane's film Ted.
- At the "Monster Mash", there is a brief scene where Mr. Garrison is shown dressed as Ryan Gosling's character from the 2011 movie Drive.
- Some costumes seen at the "Monster Mash" include Batman, Flash, Raphael from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, SpongeBob SquarePants, Harry Potter, a Smurf, "Red Bird" from Angry Birds, Finn from Adventure Time, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader from Star Wars, and Mérida from the Disney/Pixar film Brave.
Continuity
- Shelly Marsh repeats one of her notable lines from the episode "Douche and Turd", 'I hate this family!'
- This is the fifth Halloween special but the first in six years. The other specials include "Pinkeye", "Spookyfish", "Korn's Groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery", and "Hell on Earth 2006".
- This is the third time Eric Cartman is likened to Bruce Vilanch, the first and second being in "The Coon" and "Coon vs. Coon & Friends", respectively.
- A man whose house the boys visit mistakenly thinks Cartman is wearing a 'green Honey Boo Boo costume', referencing the episode "Raising the Bar" and TV reality show Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.
- In the scene where Randy is talking to the Blockbuster ghost-worker behind the counter, in the background you can see a movie with the title "The Moose Who Wouldn't Die" with a picture of Sarah Jessica Parker in a moose costume from the episode, "The Tale of Scrotie McBoogerballs".
- This is the third time the boys have entered a Halloween costume contest, the first at South Park Elementary in "Pinkeye" and the second at South Park Docks in "Korn's Groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery".
- The quote "stay gold" was last used by Cartman in the episode, "1%" when grieving over the "death" of Peter Panda.
- Kenny organises and leads the boys to try and scare away the men robbing the convenience store, a reminder of his leadership abilities of "Coon And Friends" (once divested of the Coon) as Mysterion.
