Trivia[]
- When trying to get into Dr. Mephesto's lab, Cartman's hand, Mitch Conner wears black-face, which is a racist parody of African-American performers.
- Before Dr. Mephesto explains who Cartman's father is, Stan, Kyle and Kenny burst into the lab with Muhammad and claim that cloning Muhammad is more important, claiming that no one cares who Cartman's father is, poking fun at the audience and leaving them hanging on in suspense of finding out who Cartman's father is.
- Scott Tenorman's father, Jack Tenorman, is revealed to be Eric Cartman's father.
- Curiously, in the episode "City on the Edge of Forever (Flashbacks)", a flashback occurs, where Cartman's father is revealed to be John Elway. Though this was wrong, he was still a Denver Bronco, just like Jack Tenorman.
- This episode is the first time where Kevin Mephesto speaks.
- Scott Tenorman's behavior throughout the episode is similar to that of the Joker from the Batman Comics. Furthermore, his introduction into this episode at the Chili Con-Carnival and the rollercoaster scene are made to look like an iconic sequence from the Batman: The Killing Joke.
- Because of the threats, the episode did not re-air during the 12AM EST slot nor during the 10:30PM EST slot the day after the first airing, it was replaced by "The Tale of Scrotie McBoogerballs" and "You Have 0 Friends".
- Many old supporting characters who have since stopped appearing returned in this episode such as Pip Pirrip (who gets killed later in the episode), Mr. Hankey, Dr. Mephesto and Kevin Mephesto.
- Several prominent locations from past episodes are visually destroyed, like Country Kitchen Buffet, Casa Bonita and Raisins.
- The conversation Mitch and Dr. Mephesto have is a parody of A Clockwork Orange, when Alex tries to get into an old lady's house to rob her, and she tells him that she does not let strangers in after dark, and that there is a telephone in the pub down the road.
- Characters such as the Marshes and Guermoes most likely survived because they were on the roof of the community center with Mayor McDaniels and Jimbo who come out alive.
- This episode was removed from scheduled airdate/airtime in the UK on which the newest South Park episodes are shown, and was instead replaced by a re-run of "Sexual Healing". Along with "200", it is also completely absent on the UK DVD/Blu-ray release of Season Fourteen.
- In The Simpsons episode "The Squirt and the Whale" the chalkboard gag Bart writes is "South Park, We'd Stand Beside If We Weren't So Scared" because of the death threats Trey Parker and Matt Stone received.
- This episode marks the final appearance of Pip Pirrip, not counting his picture in "Dead Kids," when Mecha Streisand stepped on him, killing him.
- This and Professor Chaos are the only episodes where Pip talks with his "new" design.
- In a deleted scene on the Season Fourteen DVD/Blu-ray, Cartman is having a tea-party with all his stuffed animals, discussing what he should do about the people who lied to him.
- This scene was later used in the Season Fifteen episode 1%, though it was adapted for that episode's story.
- According to the tenets of Islam, no one is allowed to create art depicting animals or people, including their prophet, for fear it would lead to idol worship.
- Both this episode and "200" were not published on South Park Studios, but were still listed.
- Mayor McDaniels says to the people of South Park, "Alright people. Let's start rebuilding our town... For the thirty-ninth time", mentioning all the other times South Park has been destroyed.
- Despite the fact that he is the ex-dictator of Iraq, and thus a celebrity, Saddam Hussein does not appear in this episode and "200".
- As of this episode, Stan is the only one of the four boys to never have a red-headed parent.
References to Popular Culture[]
- The song Time of the Season by the band The Zombies plays during Mitch Conner's "flashback" to Vietnam in the beginning of the episode. This song is also used during Jimbo and Ned's Vietnam flashback in "The Mexican Staring Frog of Southern Sri Lanka", which could have been a reference to that episode.
Continuity[]
- This marks Mitch Conner's third appearance on the show.
- This is the third official appearance of a majority of the Celebrities such as Tom Cruise, Rob Reiner, Barbra Streisand and others.
- This is the first major appearance of Mephesto and Kevin in just over ten seasons (his last appearance was in "Cartman Joins NAMBLA" however he did make short cameos in the crowd in "Red Sleigh Down", "It's Christmas in Canada", during the song in "I'm a Little Bit Country" and at the end of "Eat, Pray, Queef" in Season 13).
- This is Scott Tenorman's first appearance since Season Nine and his first major appearance since Season Five.
- This is Pip's first speaking role since "Professor Chaos" and appearance since "D-Yikes!". He is crushed by Mecha-Streisand when trying to convince her to leave the town alone. Because of his death, Pip has never appeared in future episodes ever since this episode aired. Many fans in Facebook asked Trey Parker and Matt Stone to revive Pip Pirrip, but all the petitions are ignored for today, making this his final appearance.
- This is Mr. Hankey's first appearance since "Red Sleigh Down".
- Bridon Gueermo and his parents appear on the rooftop behind Randy during Mecha-Streisand's attack. They last all appeared in "Elementary School Musical". Although Mr. Gueermo appeared during "Eat, Pray, Queef", singing Queef Free along with the other men.
- Chief Running Water reappears for Scott Tenorman to mimic the same scene from "Cartman's Mom is Still a Dirty Slut" The only potential father who did not appear was Chef due to his death in "The Return of Chef".
- The "Pandemic" style camera-work is brought back very briefly during Mecha-Streisand's attack on Casa Bonita.
- Tom Cruise dies on the moon, rather silently, and was shown laying dead near Jambu, who was sent to the moon in the past episode, "Free Willzyx".
- Before entering to Mephesto's lab, Kyle remembers the case when the boys were trying to make an elephant and a pig have sex, referencing "An Elephant Makes Love to a Pig".
- Tweek and his parents appear in this episode. This is Mr. Tweak's first speaking role since "Eat, Pray, Queef".
- Mecha-Streisand makes her second major appearance, once again trying to destroy South Park.
- Scott Tenorman mentions spending time in a mental institution, referencing his parents' deaths and his consumption of them.
- Kyle's speech was about intimidation and fear, and since then it has been released uncensored on the internet.
Censorship[]
Controversially, this episode was limited in its initial and DVD releases as well as being heavily modified from the original version. Indeed, this and the previous episodes are banned in multiple territories and were not initially shown.
- As a result of the previous episode "200", Trey Parker and Matt Stone were threatened by a radical Islamic website for including an image of Muhammad in disguise. It was later revealed to be Santa Claus.[1]
- In a statement from Trey Parker and Matt Stone,[2] the speech that Kyle gave was about fear and intimidation and had nothing to do with Muhammad. Despite that, all the bleeps were added by Comedy Central due to the threat against Trey and Matt.
- The word 'Muhammad' is censored in this episode by Comedy Central (not South Park Studios), due to the previous threats from Revolutionmuslim.com.
- Usually, episodes shown in Canada on The Comedy Network are uncensored. However, this episode was aired censored in Canada.
- In the DVD release of South Park Season 14, the episode 201 is censored and is the same version as when released, including the conclusive speech between Jesus, Kyle and Santa. Cursing is also censored like for television, normally being uncensored for home release. The commentary track for the episode from Trey Parker and Matt Stone is heavily censored, mainly including their statement that they are still not allowed to talk about the episode and controversy in detail then near everything else being a long censorship bleep.
- The speech was an in-cheek, though likely not intended for humor purposes, discussion about the only way to have power is with violence.
- After this episode was first aired, "Super Best Friends" and "200" were removed from the iTunes Store for purchase.
- "Super Best Friends" was also removed from the South Park Studios after "201" aired with a notice saying that they were unable to stream it. This would've been because of all the controversy that was caused by RevolutionMuslim.
Goofs[]
- Casa Bonita is in South Park in this episode - however, in the episode "Casa Bonita", Kyle mentions that it is in Denver. However, a second Casa Bonita could have been built.
- When Dr. Mephesto answers his door, he says "we must be careful", but his mouth does not move.
