@General Von Klinkenhoffen Its not ment to be a joke-
@General Von Klinkenhoffen I give your essay a B+
These characters are all pretty much exactly the same so there's no reason for anyone to have wildly different opinions about them. There isn't enough depth in this pool for a dive.
I used to hope the show would do more with them, but over time I saw that its a commentary on current events and the characters only live to serve the satire.
You'd be better off finding like minds elsewhere
@General Von Klinkenhoffen EZ CLAP
@Alumi0nix i like Wendy
@Zaquarvious I honestly really dislike wendy i feel like shes just an overrated plot device
@General Von Klinkenhoffen lol, wasn't expecting an entire essay as a response to my comment. I do believe you make fair points, although I do disagree with a few of them. For one, I understand the children are not meant to be realistic, that's why I said it's an unpopular opinion. And I do get the point of the show, I'm just saying the characters can be more than just mouthpieces for social commentary, that's my point, and again, it seems like most of you may disagree with that. And yes the social commentary was always there, but there's no doubt the show was more than just social commentary back then. And has for yours and @JohnVMaster's point about fleshed out background characters, I am obviously not expecting all of them to have like minds, and for your information I am not into Star Wars. And there's really not much to back up my point about Red because like I said, when she is characterized she does not have her own distinctive personality.
And yes you do make a fair point about Bebe, but I was talking specifically about the episode "Bebe's Boobs Destroy Society", not previous episodes before that. What I was saying is that they could have had more development brought to Bebe's character but they seemed to have only reduced her to a stereotype.
And I did not mean any offense to my "I never did understand why so many people like her", I only said that because I find her to be overrated. And yet again, you do bring up fair points, but I don't think being pressured by an online troll can change your entire personality, I guess maybe it taught her to be more humble, I dunno. And I don't think any character added anything positive in Seasons 20-21, because those are the worst seasons, for me at least. And I don't see why you think my argument about me thinking her character could use improvement is wrong. Yes she did have depths of sorts, that's why I said she was a two-dimensional character as opposed to a one-dimensional character, but my problem is her lack of personality.
I'll give you your points about Wendy, although I will argue that in "Tom's Rhinoplasty" her motives weren't really driven by character but rather to win back Stan's affections, which brings me back to my "one-note love interest" to Stan point. But I do disagree with your argument about the direction Wendy's character is going in. As I've mentioned before her personality is inconsistent because some episodes have her in a positive light and others in a negative light, and you never know what to expect from Wendy's character because she's full of surprises. So I don't really see how she's one of the most consistent characters as you put it.
No response for your arguments for Sophie, because I don't really have much of an opinion of her anyways.
And I do believe that you are pointing things out that are rather obvious. I am aware that the children are not supposed to be an accurate representation of actual children, and I am also well-aware that Liane's sex life is meant to be a joke, I'm just giving my point across that she is a very flawed person and her behaviors could have a toll on Cartman's behavior and mentality. I didn't say that all of the characters are poorly written just the female characters. I am not the only one who thinks that they are not written in the best light. Read this discussion where it seems to be unanimously agreed that a majority of the female characters are poorly written.
And I do not believe them writing characters in a consistent and positive way is the goal of South Park, I am simply saying that if they wanted to actually develop their characters instead of making them mere mouthpieces, I would be down for that. And I don't think your argument about South Park being a comedy show so it shouldn't have character development is a strong one. And like I said, it seems like everyone here seems to prefer episodes being more topical and satirical rather than original character-driven storylines, which again, is why I said it's an unpopular opinion. And what gave you the impression that this post was a joke?
@Sega&nintendofan10009 Yeah this is honestly a very South Park Fanon type of conversation in tone.
I used to think for a long time how if Trey and Matt put just a smidge more effort, we'd have good female characters... look at Strong Woman, look at Heidi. They're exactly the same - anchored by male protagonists but also largely obstacles to create inconvenience. Just like Wendy and Sharon, they are reactionary liberals but rarely act as leaders.
Trey doesn't want to develop characters, he needs archetypes for satire, and every single female character he creates is the same archetype played off a different male character.
@JohnVMaster Right? I think the show can certainly do a better job at character development. Now don't get me wrong, I do like South Park's satire and I believe it can nail current events in a fresh and clever way better than any other show, but I feel it can be more than just social commentary y'know.
As @General Von Klinkenhoffen mentioned, character development and structure is not the point of South Park as it is meant to be exaggerated and satirical, but I just can't agree with that. Part of good writing, for me at least, is making characters you could root for, someone you can relate to. But a majority of the characters in South Park don't even feel human, as they are just mouthpieces with no layers or substance to their characters. There are hundreds of characters in this show so I obviously don't expect every single one of them to be fleshed out, but I feel like maybe some longtime underdog characters could have some development or depth.
I saw a video that suggested that the absolute prime of the series (around 5-8) had the strength of quite a few good character studies. Perhaps that special character focus is a part of what makes those seasons so great. And despite their satire, they largely age fairly well.
